The smell of coffee roasting

One of Hotel 1904’s closest neighbors is the unique coffee roastery Jacu. As you pass by their large windows facing the street, across from the city park - you may observe the large bags on pallets filled with coffee beans arriving from farms around the world, especially Ethiopia and Colombia. Their own coffee bar is an experience in itself. With their large windows facing the city park this space is well worth a visit. The building used to be the city’s transformer station which in the old days served the city with light and heat, however it now serves the city and beyond with world class coffee. The best part of it all is that you can smell the wonderful roasting throughout the neighborhood. For coffee enthusiasts in particular, an appointment may be made for a visit and a tour of the roastery.

Jacu has actually housed several art exhibitions in collaboration with Hugo Opdal. Artists such as Pushwagner, Sverre Bjertnes, Bjarne Melgaard and Kenneth Blom have all left their marks here.

The founders of Jacu, Oliver and Anne Birte Hanken have both backgrounds from art and design, and together with Gunnar Lillevold who is head of roasting they started Jacu. With their love for the city and the desire to merge art and coffee, they moved from Oslo to Ålesund in 2011 to start the roastery. The city’s local roastery delivers their coffee to Hotel 1904 – and with personal delivery of freshly roasted beans roasted in the same street as the hotel, the coffee cannot be fresher or shorter travelled.

The hotel's own director André Klevberg is an award winning barista himself. With his background he wants his guests to be served high quality coffee as a standard. You may also buy fresh Jacu coffee bags at the hotel and bring the taste home.
